Marriage License

 

  • Marriage licenses are issued by the Circuit Court Clerk of any city or county in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • The Marriage License Application process has been automated in the Clerk’s Office.  Application Forms are available on the Public Access Terminals in our Customer Waiting Area.
  • Out-of-state-residents may apply at any Circuit Court Clerk’s Office in the Commonwealth.
  • Both parties must be present in order to obtain a marriage license.
  • No blood tests or witnesses are required.
  • This office requires a photo identification card as proof of identity.
  • Social security number or Virginia Department of Motor Vehicle control number is required.
  • The fee for the license is $30.00. Cash, Checks and MasterCard or Visa are acceptable.
  • The minimum age is 16 years old (§20-48) ; however; anyone under the age of 18 must have consent from a parent or legal guardian.  Consent can be either in person, under oath or a written and notarized consent form. (§20-49) .
  • The Marriage Commissioner is available during business hours to perform the ceremony. The Commissioner’s fee is $50.00 (cash only).  Marriage Commissioners are Cynthia Smith and Sally O’Neal.  The telephone number is (757) 664-4175.
  • The fee for certified copies of the marriage certificate is $2.50 each.
